Text to Speech — Complete Guide & Instructions
MakeCard Text to Speech reads any typed or pasted text aloud using your device's built-in speech voices. Pick from every voice installed on your system — typically Hindi, Indian English, US/UK English and more — then fine-tune playback with speed and pitch sliders. Because it runs on the browser SpeechSynthesis API, everything happens on-device with zero upload, making it useful for proofreading by ear, language practice, accessibility and hands-free listening.
How to Use Text to Speech
- 1 Type or paste your text into the "Text" box — a welcome sample is preloaded to try.
- 2 Open the "Voice" dropdown and pick a voice — the list shows each voice name with its language code.
- 3 Drag the "Speed" slider between 0.5× and 2× to slow down or speed up the reading.
- 4 Adjust "Pitch" between 0.5 and 2 if you want a lower or higher tone.
- 5 Press "▶ Speak" to start; the same button toggles "⏸ Pause" and "▶ Resume" while speaking.
- 6 Press "■ Stop" at any time to end playback immediately.

Practical Everyday Use Cases
- Listening to an essay or email aloud to catch typos your eyes skip over.
- Practising Hindi or English pronunciation by hearing text spoken back.
- Reading long articles aloud while cooking, commuting or resting your eyes.
- Helping low-vision users or children hear written content.
- Previewing how narration or voiceover text sounds before recording it.
Pro Tips for Best Results
- Install extra system voices (Windows/Android/iOS settings) to expand the dropdown list.
- Set speed to 0.8× for careful proof-listening — errors stand out more at slower pace.
- Chrome and Edge expose the most voices; some browsers show only one or two.
- Break very long text into paragraphs — stopping and restarting is cleaner than one huge utterance.
Common Problems & Solutions
Check the device volume and that the tab is not muted. Also make sure a voice is selected in the dropdown — on first load it may take a second for voices to appear.
Voice availability depends on your OS and browser — try Chrome or Edge for the widest selection, or install additional language voices in system settings.
Very long passages can get cut by some browsers. Split the text into smaller chunks and speak them one at a time.
Privacy & Security
100% Client-Side Execution
Speech is generated entirely on your device by the browser SpeechSynthesis engine — your text is never uploaded, sent to a server, or stored.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about using Text to Speech
Yes — it uses the speech engine already built into your browser and operating system. There is no charge, no word limit and no account needed.
Yes — if your system has a Hindi voice installed, it appears in the Voice dropdown and is auto-selected when available. Chrome and Edge ship with Hindi voices on most devices.
The voice list comes from your operating system and browser — Windows, macOS, Android and ChromeOS each expose different voices, so no two devices are identical.
No — SpeechSynthesis plays audio live and does not produce a file. To save audio, use the Voice Recorder tool with system audio, or a dedicated TTS download service.
Once the page is loaded, most system voices work without internet since synthesis happens on-device. Cloud-based voices (marked in some browsers) do need a connection.
