Retirement Calculators — Complete Guide & Instructions

MakeCard Retirement Calculators is a 3-in-1 planning tool covering the most common Indian retirement instruments — Public Provident Fund (PPF), Employee Provident Fund (EPF), and Gratuity. Enter your deposit amount, service years, and interest rate to see the total invested, interest earned, and final maturity value, all formatted in rupees, lakhs, and crores. It is built for salaried employees, government staff, and anyone mapping out long-term savings.

How to Use Retirement Calculators

  1. 1 Pick a tab at the top — PPF, EPF, or Gratuity.
  2. 2 For PPF, enter your yearly deposit, tenure in years (minimum 15), and the interest rate (defaults to the current 7.1%), then press "Calculate PPF".
  3. 3 For EPF, enter your basic monthly salary, years of service, and the EPF rate (defaults to 8.25%), then press "Calculate EPF".
  4. 4 For Gratuity, enter your last drawn basic + DA salary and years of service (minimum 5), then press "Calculate gratuity".
  5. 5 Read the result cards — Deposited, Interest, and Maturity for PPF/EPF, or the single payout figure for Gratuity.

Key Features & Capabilities

  • Three calculators in one page — PPF, EPF, and Gratuity — switchable with a single tap.
  • Editable interest rates so you can model rate changes announced by the government or EPFO.
  • EPF projection assumes 12% employee + 12% employer contribution on basic pay with monthly compounding.
  • Gratuity uses the statutory formula (15 x last drawn salary x years) / 26 under the Payment of Gratuity Act.
  • Results shown as invested amount, interest earned, and maturity value — auto-formatted in thousands, lakhs, and crores.

Supported Formats & Specifications

Output Total deposited, interest earned, maturity value in INR (lakh/crore format)

Practical Everyday Use Cases

  • Estimating the maturity value of a 15-year PPF account before deciding whether to extend it in 5-year blocks.
  • Projecting your EPF corpus at retirement age from your current basic salary.
  • Checking the gratuity payout you would receive after completing 5, 10, or 20 years with an employer.
  • Comparing how a higher yearly PPF deposit changes the final corpus.
  • Getting a quick retirement savings figure to discuss with a financial planner.

Pro Tips for Best Results

  • PPF deposits above the Rs 1.5 lakh per financial year limit earn no extra interest or tax benefit — cap your input accordingly.
  • EPF interest rates are declared annually by the EPFO; rerun the projection whenever a new rate is notified.
  • For gratuity, service of 6 months or more in the final year is typically rounded up to a full year.
  • Run PPF and EPF side by side — many savers use PPF to top up retirement savings beyond their EPF deduction.

Common Problems & Solutions

The tool compounds PPF yearly and EPF monthly at a flat rate with no salary growth — real balances grow faster if your salary increases each year.

Gratuity requires a minimum of 5 years of continuous service; enter at least 5 in the years field for a meaningful result.

Use the defaults (7.1% for PPF, 8.25% for EPF) for the current period, or enter the rate printed on your latest EPFO/PPF statement.

Everything you need to know about using Retirement Calculators

Each yearly deposit earns compound interest at the declared rate (currently 7.1%). The tool adds your deposit to the balance at the start of each year, then applies the annual rate — over 15+ years the compounding produces the final maturity figure.

For employees covered under the Payment of Gratuity Act: (15 x last drawn basic salary + DA x completed years of service) / 26. You become eligible after 5 years of continuous service.

EPF contributions are calculated on basic salary plus dearness allowance only — not on full CTC. The tool assumes the standard 12% employee plus 12% employer share on basic pay.

A minimum of 5 years of continuous service with the same employer is required to be eligible for gratuity under the Payment of Gratuity Act.

They serve different roles: EPF is automatic for salaried employees, while PPF is open to everyone including the self-employed and offers tax-free returns under EEE status. Many people use both together.
