Gradient Generator — Complete Guide & Instructions

MakeCard Gradient Generator is a visual CSS gradient builder that removes the guesswork from writing linear-gradient() and radial-gradient() syntax. Toggle between linear and radial types, dial in an angle from 0–360°, and stack unlimited colour stops — each with its own colour picker and position slider. A full-height live preview updates on every change, presets give you instant starting points, and a single click copies the finished CSS declaration ready to paste into your stylesheet.

How to Use Gradient Generator

  1. 1 Choose the gradient type — "Linear" or "Radial" — at the top of the panel.
  2. 2 For linear gradients, drag the "Angle" slider anywhere from 0° to 360°.
  3. 3 Under "Color Stops", click each swatch to pick a colour and drag its slider to set the stop position in percent.
  4. 4 Press "+ Add Color Stop" to layer more colours (minimum two), or remove a stop with ×.
  5. 5 Optionally tap a Preset tile for a ready-made two-colour blend to start from.
  6. 6 Confirm the Live Preview, then hit "Copy CSS" to grab the background rule.

Practical Everyday Use Cases

  • Designing a hero-section or button background that fits a brand palette.
  • Creating smooth multi-stop colour transitions for dashboards, cards, and banners.
  • Prototyping a colour scheme quickly before committing it to a design system.
  • Generating overlay gradients to place behind white text on photo backgrounds.
  • Teaching or learning how angle and stop positions affect a CSS gradient.

Pro Tips for Best Results

  • For a subtle, professional look, keep adjacent stops within the same colour family and 15–25% lightness apart.
  • A hard edge — two stops at the same position — creates clean colour blocks useful for striped patterns.
  • 135° usually looks most natural on wide banners because it follows the eye's diagonal scan.
  • Always paste the generated rule into a background or background-image property; it is not a standalone color value.

Common Problems & Solutions

Visible bands appear between very different hues. Add an intermediate colour stop or use more stops so the browser interpolates through a midpoint colour.

The angle slider applies only to linear gradients — switch off Radial if the control has no visible effect on the preview.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about using Gradient Generator

Use background: linear-gradient(angle, color1 position, color2 position). For example, linear-gradient(135deg, #ff6a00 0%, #ee0979 100%). Our generator writes this for you visually.

Linear transitions colours along a straight line at a set angle; radial radiates outward from a centre point in a circle or ellipse. Linear suits banners and buttons; radial suits spotlights and vignettes.

CSS supports unlimited stops — this tool adds as many as you create, each with its own position percentage.

Some older mobile browsers need a -webkit- prefix for unusual syntax, but standard linear-gradient works everywhere modern. Also check that the element has height — a gradient on a zero-height div paints nothing.
